In 2024, Creased Puddle collaborated with Essex Council and Phoenix Futures to deliver a comprehensive neurodiversity training program for partner agencies. The training aimed to enhance the understanding and support of neurodivergent individuals within various sectors, including police forces, prisons, probation services, and social care.
Objectives
The primary objectives of the training were:
- To provide comprehensive neurodiversity awareness training to frontline staff.
- To equip participants with practical strategies for supporting neurodivergent service users.
- To foster an inclusive environment that values and respects the neurodivergent experience
Training content
The training was structured into 3 modules:
- Module 1: Focused on understanding neurodiversity and neurodivergent conditions also covering elements such as sensory environments, masking, stimming, and executive functioning.
- Module 2: Brought this learning into 2 case studies looking more closely at research and links to drug and alcohol misuse, homelessness and criminality. Learners also explored how to increase engagement by using alternative communication tools and strategies and inclusive questions techniques.
- Module 3: Provided opportunities for delegates to work through their own areas of influence and discuss how to implement the learning across whole of the Criminal Justice Sector.

The feedback from the training sessions was overwhelmingly positive:
Positive feedback: Participants reported that the training for its comprehensive coverage and practical applications. They found the sessions to be informative and engaging, with many noting that they gained valuable insights and skills to support neurodivergent service users effectively.
Improved practices: The training has led to significant improvements in how staff members support neurodivergent individuals. Participants reported feeling more confident in their ability to adapt their approach and provide better support.
Increased awareness across multiple teams: Attendees reported that training together and across Probation, Police, Housing, Drug and Alcohol services and Adult Social care increased awareness of different roles. Whilst the planning section also provided opportunity to develop cross-departmental understanding and collaboration.
